Stress and Hair Loss
“Why am I losing my hair?” “Am I balding?” “What can I do to prevent hair loss?” “What products do you recommend for hair loss?” These are just a few of the comments and concerns that people are expressing and have been over the past couple years. It’s been a common issue throughout my career as a licensed Cosmetologist, but the rate of this concern lately is alarming. To be clear, this is not medical advice but an anecdotal observation that sparked my curiosity for the root of this problem. With the overarching theme of stress going on in the current times and the increasing rate of hair loss concerns, there may be a correlation between the two. In an article from Harvard Gazette, it explains how when our body is in a state of chronic stress, it produces cortisol (the stress hormone), which affects the resting phase of the hair. The prolonged resting phase occurs naturally in the body with age and other factors however, chronic stress exacerbates this effect.
What can we do? Book a consultation, I have product recommendations to help aid in the process of allowing the hair to grow in a healthy way, and let’s increase our tools to help cope with the chronic stress. Knowing that our hair can be the messenger for another part of ourselves that needs some attention, an integrative approach to dealing with the root of the problem is key. Learning how to calm the mind, and nervous system, we can start to allow the body to come back to a state that it can thrive in and have healthy hair. Join me for a course in meditation, yoga, journaling, etc. to help learn new ways of managing the stress that is affecting your hair.
